Applications are invited for 6 or 12-month fellowships in anaesthesia sub-specialties based at St Mary’s Hospital. We invite applications with start dates from Nov 23, Feb 24 and Aug 24 (start dates).
These posts are ideally suited to Specialist Registrars approaching the end of their training, or an anaesthetist who has completed their training and is looking to round off their sub-specialty experience prior to securing a consultant post.
St Mary’s is a Major Trauma Centre situated in NW London that treats in excess of 2500 adult and paediatric trauma patients per year (busiest in London) from diverse backgrounds. In 2014, NHS England named it the best MTC in the UK. We are also a tertiary referral centre for vascular anaesthesia and do over 300 arterial cases per year including open, endovascular and bypass procedures.

We can also offer a combination of sub-specialities within the 12-month fellowships to suit successful candidates. In order to facilitate shortlisting, applicants should clearly state in their application which fellowship they wish to be considered for.

In addition to clinical duties which includes protected training lists, one day a week is dedicated to fellows undertaking activities that enhance their non-clinical skills such as education, research, quality improvement and publication preparation. This time can also be used to further clinical activity elsewhere in the Trust or at other hospitals. As a Senior Clinical Fellow, the post holder will take part in a 1 in 8 senior tier on-call rota alongside other clinical fellows and senior trainees at their respective clinical sites.

• To provide high quality vascular/regional/bariatric/trauma and emergency anaesthesia within a one to one consultant supervised environment initially, and then go on to manage cases with indirect supervision.
• To gain specialist subspeciality experience
• To communicate with and participate in anaesthetic services for high dependency and critical care specialities.
• To engage in clinical governance activities specific to ‘subspeciality’ anaesthesia as well as for general anaesthesia including critical incident reporting, attendance of morbidity and mortality meetings, perform audit and participate in mandatory training.
• To actively engage in teaching and training of other members of the anaesthetic department and hospital staff.
• Engage in quality improvement activity, additional management and administrative tasks as deemed appropriate to the position.
• To actively support and participate in audit and research projects to increase clinical and academic excellence within the department.
• To contribute to the development of anaesthetic guidelines at a local, regional and national level.
• The post holder will also have an NHS service commitment to the anaesthetic on call rota, a 1 in 8 full shift pattern, as the senior registrar on call. This covers emergency theatre work, anaesthetic requirements for trauma calls at the Major Trauma Centre and overseeing anaesthetic care of the obstetric anaesthetic registrar. Emergency theatres include specialities for general surgery, vascular, orthopaedics, gynaecology and orthoplastics as well as the occasional medical emergency. They will participate as a trauma team member at trauma calls when on duty.
• There is a strong departmental tradition of performing research and audit in this service and of publishing results
• Previous experience of research and completed audit will be expected
