About the role

Join us on a 12-month industrial placement to work with and learn from some of the best people in the energy industry!

Have you ever wondered how we keep the electricity flowing and the lights on for all electricity consumers in Great Britain? If so, join us during your penultimate year at university as an Industrial Placement Power System Engineer within the National Energy System Operator. You will gain first-hand experience from a core team who are working to operate a carbon free electricity system by 2035.

As a technical undergraduate, you’ll be contributing to developing future system and procedures and subject to the requirements of the team, opportunities may include developing and informing our understanding of future challenges and potential solutions in technical, economic and market fronts.

Our Industrial Placement

You’ll be involved in activities responsible for, but not exclusive to:

  • Supporting system operability assessments and innovation projects
  • Regional development programme
  • Economic assessment
  • Build and maintain offline power system model – NESO maintains an offline version of the GB electricity system in DigSILENT Power Factory. The task will involve keeping it up to date and validating addition/changes etc. to the model.
  • Support the Customer Connections process
  • Generator connection assessment and compliance procedure

What you’ll need to apply

  • You’re customer focused, driven, ambitious, engaged, agile, and passionate about climate change.
  • You’re on track to achieve a minimum 2.2 degree in an Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Physics or Maths discipline.
  • You must be in your penultimate year of University
  • Ideally, you’ll have a valid full UK Driving Licence.
