What you’ll need

You’ll need to have completed at least one year of study and to be on track to receive a minimum of a 2:2 in MEng or MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent subject. Your academic qualification must be accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Any offer is subject to a satisfactory medical.

What you’ll be doing

Our scheme develops ‘world-class’ mechanical engineers who seek to become the senior engineers, subject matter experts and leaders of the future. You’ll play a part in transforming the most recognised transport network in the world and help us to deliver our ambition of creating a greener, healthier, and more prosperous city.

Your work will include finding solutions to meaningful problems, spanning multiple transport modes. You’ll deliver city-defining programmes and cutting-edge technology by collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams across TfL and with customers, local government and the supply chain.

Some of the major projects that our mechanical engineers are currently working on include:

• Elizabeth line
• Bank station capacity upgrade
• Piccadilly line upgrade
• Step-free access

We’ll equip you with the skills and experience that you need for a successful engineering career. We’ll also support your route to gaining Chartered Engineer status with the IMechE, and your selection of a permanent role within the TfL Engineering Directorate.

Your development programme will be made up of one or two placement rotations. Here’s an idea of what your programme could look like:

Placement 1 – Depot Operational Engineering

• Learn how to apply root-cause analysis
• Carry out hands-on maintenance inspections
• Implement upgrades generated by the rolling stock design team
• Be based at one our train maintenance depots

Placement 2 – Major Projects

• Experience the commercial aspects of engineering at a pan-TfL level. This could be anything from cycleways, bridges and structures to Tube upgrades
