For more than 20 years, Globeleq has been a long-term investor, developer, owner and operator of diversified power projects in Africa, where the company is one of the largest Independent Power Producers. With nearly 1900MW of generation capacity in operation across 17 power plants in 7 countries, 485MW of new power projects in construction and >2,000MW in development, Globeleq is one of the largest independent power producers solely focused in Africa. Globeleq is 70% owned by British International Investment and 30% by Norfund, the development finance institutions of the UK and Norway, and has a proven track record for supporting the ongoing development of the African power sector.

Globeleq’s various generation technologies include gas, wind, solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS), and geothermal. The company is also actively pursuing new opportunities which are emerging from the energy transition, including desalination projects powered by renewables, as well as green hydrogen and ammonia projects.

This Intern role is required to support the Business Development team in the development, due diligence, structuring, financing, execution of renewable energy projects in Africa, covering the full project lifecycle, from early-stage concept to financial close and commercial operation.

Focus will primarily be on Globeleq’s Egypt green hydrogen project. However, the BD intern might also support renewable energy projects based on other technologies and in other markets in Africa (e.g. South Africa, Zambia, Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, Senegal), depending on the needs of the business.

Key responsibilities

Egypt Green Hydrogen Project (~50-70% estimated time)

The BD Intern will directly support the Project Director in the development of the project. The BD Intern will support or lead various key workstreams, including but not limited to:

  • Market study – Review and prioritisation of hydrogen carriers, end uses, import countries and offtakers; Competitive benchmarking; Strategy recommendations for Globeleq.
  • Offtake – Support in the offtake negotiations; Due diligence on potential offtakers.
  • Policy / subsidies – Review of and application to specific incentive schemes.
  • Engineering – Due diligence on potential electrolyser suppliers; research on various technologies.
  • Ad-hoc support on project management, certification, E&S, financial modelling, legal and financing workstreams.

Ad-hoc support to other renewable energy projects (~30-50% estimated time)

The BD Intern might be involved in various stages of development of active renewable energy projects. Potential responsibilities might include:

  • Support the Project Director in the development, due diligence, bid and/or acquisition of renewable power generation, green hydrogen and desalination projects across Africa, from project concept to financial close.
  • Participate in preparation of pre-qualification and bids submission in competitive tenders for renewable energy and desalination projects, including contributing to the optimal structuring of the project. One opportunity might include the GET FiT Zambia renewable energy tender.
  • Contribute to drafting internal and external material relating to the project/opportunity such as Investment Committee and Board papers, expressions of interest from potential lenders and commercial proposals.
  • Assist the Project Director in the project co-ordination, scheduling and budget, working closely with the internal business development, finance, financial modelling, legal, engineering, E&S and HR teams to ensure that key milestones are achieved on schedule and within budget.
  • Provide high quality and insightful research and summary presentations on the power, green hydrogen and desalination sectors of target countries.

Experience, knowledge and qualifications

  • Minimum degree level qualified. Master in Business Administration, Finance, Engineering or similar qualifications, or students in last year of Master degree. Candidates with background in chemical engineering, process engineering or oil & gas are also welcome to apply.
  • Relevant power generation sector experience, in particular good knowledge of solar PV and wind project.
  • Specific experience in the field of green hydrogen, green ammonia and/or SWRO desalination highly desirable. Knowledge of energy storage projects also welcome
  • Some experience in Financial Modelling is a plus
  • Experience in Africa and / or other emerging markets is welcome
  • Some travel required on an ad-hoc basis )
  • Languages: English – written and verbal business proficiency; Arabic or French is a plus
