PET Digital Project Internship Chalfont St Giles 2024

Type: Intern
Region: South East

An opening is available for a part-time three-month internship (0.8 FTE) to work on cutting-edge Digital R&D projects at GE Healthcare Pharmaceutical Diagnostics (PDx). The fixed-term contractor will join a multidisciplinary team to help with the development and evaluation of AI tools for automated lesion detection in PET/CT images of patients with metastatic cancer.

Job description

The PDx business researches, manufactures, and markets contrast media and molecular imaging agents used during medical imaging exams to enable better visualisation of human organs, tissue, and biological processes. This in turn helps physicians in early detection, diagnosis, and management decisions for patient care. Digital tools are increasingly valuable to allow optimal use of these agents, for example through training apps, workflow management, dosimetry, image analysis and advanced diagnostics that combine multivariate biomarkers.

PDx develops molecular imaging agents, including novel PET tracers which each have different physiological binding. Therefore, some automated tools which may work well on PET/CT images with an FDG tracer (the most common PET tracer) may not work ‘out of the box’ with novel PET tracers. Therefore, tasks for the short contract will include training, validating and testing models for automated lesion detection on PET/CT images acquired using different tracers. Additionally, the contractor will implement multiple methods for measuring model accuracy which take into account the clinical needs.

PDx R&D is a multidisciplinary, international team with close links with clinicians and researchers in hospitals, academia, and pharma. This role will provide genuine learning opportunities and challenging projects with significant responsibilities, to help shape state-of-the-art digital healthcare tools and services for our customers.

Start: June 2024

Roles and responsibilities

  • Development and testing of lesion detection algorithms for novel PET tracers
  • Implement clinically relevant model accuracy metrics
  • Disseminate results to all stakeholders internally at the end of the fixed-term contract
  • Potential for co-authoring a scientific publication

Qualifications/requirements

  • MSc in data science, biomedical engineering or similar field
  • Experience in AI model development for image segmentation tasks
  • Experience working with PET/CT images

The ideal candidate will be

  • Passionate about medical technology and software in healthcare
  • Able to work proactively on individual tasks, but also collaboratively within a team environment
  • Energised by agile and creative projects, where objectives may change quickly
  • A great communicator, both verbally and in writing, able to communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences
