We have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Design Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Engineer starting in September 2024

About the role/project

Costain is a leading provider of engineering, project delivery and asset support services which include the Energy, Water and Defence sectors.

This role is for a Graduate Design HSE Engineer to join the Manchester based Design HSE Engineering team which provides Technical Safety engineering expertise to major projects and Feasibility, Conceptual and Front-End Design studies for the Energy, Water and Nuclear Sectors as well as supporting complex project delivery in the wider Costain Group.

The successful candidate will join the Graduate Development Program and ACT scheme which is accredited by the Institute of Chemical Engineers and is designed to equip Chemical Engineering graduates with the skills and experience required to take them forward in their career with the company. As a Graduate Design HSE Engineer you will be assigned a mentor to provide support in your professional development and to guide you towards chartership. The training program provides “On the Job” technical development with graduates working on real work assignments under supervision and rapidly taking on responsibility for design work across the full project lifecycle within multi-disciplinary project teams.

**This role is based in our Manchester Office – but you will be required to visit different sites, so a full UK driving licence is essential.

Key responsibilities

  • The design work undertaken by Graduate Design HSE Engineers is varied and assignments can include work across all project phases including Feasibility Studies; Conceptual Design; Front End Engineering Design (FEED); Detailed Design and Site Activities
  • Study Work can include Consequence Modelling usingspecialised software; hazardous area classification; input to technologyselection; economic evaluation; input into project schedule and cost estimates;input to basis of design and technical report preparation
  • FEED and Detailed Design activities include: designphilosophies; Fire, Explosion and Toxic Dispersion Consequence Modelling usingspecialised software; Hazardous Area classification; Safety and EnvironmentalRisk Assessments; Quantitative Risk Analysis; Active and Passive FireProtection assessments and specifications; specification of Fire and GasDetection systems; technology selection; economic evaluation;preparation of PFDs and P&IDs for firewater systems; input into projectschedule and cost estimates; equipment sizing and specification; specificationof instrumentation; input to design assessments including ENVID and HAZOP
  • Business rotations into other business functions mayform part of the graduates development plan available in order to providefurther breadth of experience which can include: Process Engineering; BusinessDevelopment; Marketing; Project Engineering; Construction; Commissioning;Proposals and Work Winning

Costain Graduate Development Programme

The programme will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business and of course, the technical skills you will learn day-to-day on the job and through external training as needed.

The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond. We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8-12 months, to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company.

Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way.

In addition to the programme, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership.

Graduates may have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period, in sectors including energy, nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels.

About you

  • You will have or expected to achieve a good result in MEng or equivalent in an IChemE accredited Chemical Engineering degree
  • To enable us to fully assess your application, please ensure your application includes details of your educational qualifications at both degree and A Level; university course modules and projects undertaken, yearly degree course results including module breakdown where available
  • While the role will be predominantly based in our South Manchester Office, mobility to work on secondment to any of our offices or project sites is required – a full UK driving licence is essential
