Graduate Process Engineer

Type: Graduate
Region: London

Project Overview:

For more than 70 years, Atomic Weapons Enterprise (AWE) has supported the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy and the Continuous At Sea Deterrent. They use nuclear know-how and technical expertise to provide innovative solutions that support the UK’s counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction activities. Like Bechtel, they create and maintain a safe operating culture where safety is front and centre of everything they do. From building state-of-the-art facilities, to supporting Production, Science, Engineering and Technology programmes, the management of Environment, Safety, Health and Wellbeing underpins all activities at AWE.

Position Summary – Graduate Process Engineer

Career opportunity available to self-motivated, high performing Chemical Process Engineer with a proven track record seeking technical challenges in the process design of a range of nuclear technologies. The engineer would be required to utilise their knowledge in all areas of design from conceptual studies to detailed engineering. The engineer should have a proven track record and will be recognised for their understanding of the key nuclear process concepts. The candidate will be familiar with standard process deliverables such as design basis, MEBs, PFDs, process descriptions, P&IDs etc and would be comfortable both originating and checking these documents.

Key Responsibilities:

Executes process deliverables according to a set engineering design criteria utilising approved engineering procedures, practices, and codes and standards.

Prepares, coordinates, and reviews designs, studies, reports and proposals.

Uses specialized engineering programs to interpret or complete calculations.

Takes the initiative to coordinate the design development of a system with other engineering disciplines while managing workload and meeting schedule due dates.

Apply basic chemical engineering principals of heat transfer, vapor-liquid equilibria, mass transfer and thermodynamics in process design.

Develop process engineering deliverables such as PFDs, MEBs, Equipment Datasheets, Utility Summaries and other process deliverables required for the facility design. Develop and check Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), from preliminary drawings to issue for construction. Develop and check Line Designation Tables (line lists with process and mechanical design conditions captured).

Participate in 3D Model and P&ID Reviews

Participate in safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP/ SIL), as well as reviewing compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.

Review deliverables from other disciplines, and suppliers during the execution of the project to ensure that process intent has been adequately incorporated into the facility design.

Identify issues (problems, value improvement opportunities) and help clarify areas of complexity during all phases of the engineering design work.

Support informal studies and technical briefing with customers, suppliers, and other departments/disciplines.

Education and Experience Requirements:

A recognized master’s degree in chemical engineering from an accredited college or university

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Ability to gain Chartered Engineer (IChemE or similar) status within 18 months.

An understanding of chemical engineering principles of heat transfer, vapor-liquid equilibria, mass transfer and thermodynamics, and their general application to process design.

Relevant industrial experience in multiple types of units/processes. Nuclear experience a plus.

Excellent knowledge of technical theory, engineering principles, good engineering practices and how to apply them for design execution.

Experience with major regulations and industry codes and standards affecting standard design, quality, or processes.

Knowledgeable in process design of equipment, including vessels, columns, heat exchangers, gloveboxes and package process specifications for equipment and control valves.

Experience with process configuration and optimization studies to increase product yield and reduce utility consumption (steam, power, cooling water).

Process Engineering experience in EPC and/or operating industry, with a many complex lead roles undertaken.

Must be able to obtain a SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.
