How to find purpose and use it to give you direction!
Making decisions about your early career with any sense of purpose might seem like an impossible task.
You might hear advice like “be practical,” “do what you enjoy,” “follow the money,” or “you need to be x, y, or z.” It’s easy to feel pigeonholed before you’ve had a chance to figure things out for yourself, and that can be stressful. Phrases like “It’s the rest of your life we are talking about here” can feel especially daunting, and are often misconceptions. In the modern era, people change careers all the time. But why?
That’s exactly why you’re here. Your sense of purpose is not static—it’s a living, evolving part of you. So, what do you do? Here’s our guide to identifying your purpose and using it to give you direction.
1. What do you really enjoy doing?
Think about what activities make you happiest. This could be anything from working with animals to designing video games. Imagine if money were no object—what would you choose to do? Once you have a couple of ideas, research careers that align with them. Try to find the closest match, or if that’s not feasible right away, identify a steppingstone job that could lead to it. Loving what you do fuels a strong sense of purpose. If you’re unsure of your passions, check out our discovery article on attraction, attachment, and aspiration for more insights.
2. You have found a career, now what?~
Review your qualifications, and list your experience and skills. If you’ve had a job before, break it down to see what you’ve accomplished. If you lack formal experience, consider other skills or projects you’ve worked on. This step not only helps you prepare your CV but also broadens your perspective on the skills you already have.
